TOOTH EXTRACTIONS & WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL CHAMPLIN, MN

Dental Extractions (also referred to as to as Exodontia) is the removal of a tooth (or teeth) from the socket in the Alveolar bone. Extractions may need to be performed for a wide variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons is to remove a tooth (or teeth) which have become non-restorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease or dental trauma. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted (i.e. stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) which may potentially cause recurring infections of the gums. Another common reason for extraction is often for orthodontics procedures if a patient’s teeth are crowded to create space so the rest of the teeth can be straightened.

Tooth extraction is a straightforward process and the vast majority can be usually performed quickly while the individual is awake by using local anesthetic injections to eliminate painful sensations. Local anesthetics are used to block pain. Dental phobia can be overcome through Sedation, which can be an issue for some individuals. After the tooth is removed, stitches may be used to replace the gum into the normal position.

Immediately after the tooth is removed, a bite pack is used to apply pressure to the tooth socket and stop the bleeding. After a tooth extraction, we recommend not disturbing the blood clot in the socket as well as avoiding vigorous rinsing of the mouth and minimizing strenuous activity. If the blood clot is dislodged, bleeding can restart, or alveolar osteitis (aka “dry socket”) can develop, which can be very painful and lead to delayed healing of the socket. Smoking should be avoided for at least 24 hours as it impairs wound healing and makes dry socket significantly more likely. We advise our patients to use hot salt water mouth baths starting after 24 hours of the extraction.

What is a Tooth Extraction?

It is a procedure that involves removing a tooth to alleviate pain, prevent further infection, or to prepare for orthodontics. Sometimes, your dentist will also recommend extracting your wisdom teeth in order to prevent crowding and unnecessary pain if they do not fully emerge.

How long will it last?

The procedure itself will only take a few minutes. The tooth, gum, and bone will be locally anesthetized so you won’t feel any pain. During the procedure, you should only feel pressure from the dentist while he is applying pressure to the socket of your tooth. In some cases, you can undergo a full sedation when you have more than one tooth to be extracted. Laughing gas can also be used to help quell any anxiety during the procedure.
