GUM TREATMENTS FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASE

What Causes Gum Disease?

Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on our teeth. Brushing and flossing is one way to help get rid of plaque, but plaque that is not removed can harden and form tartar that brushing alone can not clean. Only a professional cleaning by V-KARE Family Dentistry & Cosmetics Clinic, Champlin, MN can remove tartar.

What can be done about Gum Disease?

Professional Dental Examination, X-Ray, and Teeth Cleaning

V-KARE Family Dentistry & Cosmetics Clinic, Champlin, MN always inspects the health of your gums during a routine checkup while we remove the plaque and tartar that builds up and hardens on the tooth surface which can only be removed with a professional cleaning from above and below the gum line of all teeth. During this examination if we determine you have some signs of gum disease, we may recommend professional dental cleaning more than twice-a-year.

Scaling and Root Planing

The Scaling and Root Plaining process is a deep-cleaning, nonsurgical procedure, that occurs under a local anesthetic, where plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line are scraped away (scaling) and rough spots on the tooth root are made smooth (planing). Smoothing the rough spots removes bacteria and provides a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth. Scaling and root planing are done if you have plaque and tartar under the gums that needs to be removed.
